MINUTES CONF CALL FEB 5 2013

MINUTES OF CONFERENCE CALL 2/5/2013, Get Money Out – Maryland

PRESENT:

Joe Adams, Charlie Cooper, Michael Lore, Cliff Terry     (including three of four members of the temporary Executive Committee)

GMOM PRIORITY ISSUES:

Charlie, personally, has a preference for working on federal issues.

We don’t have to be specific about priorities at this point; Exec Committee can respond to changing circumstances.

Sen. Raskin’s shareholder approval bill, SB 772, should be one of the priorities.

The charter will have a broad statement that could include many issues, such ethics, redistricting, etc. etc.

We should probably try to limit our asks (during e-alerts and phonebanks) to no more than one or two.  (Additional alerts can be found on our website).

Joe and others expressed lack of enthusiasm for Del. Cardin’s comprehensive campaign financing bill, which has not yet been finalized; and will increase campaign contribution limits, unfortunately.   Joe notified Del. Cardin that he, personally, cannot support the bill.

HOW TO APPROACH SEN MIKULSKI:

On the federal level, Michael felt that we shouldn’t ask Senator Mikulski to co-sponsor a particular amendment resolution (there are problems with all of them, and it’s problematic to get specific at this time).  Rather, we should ask her to fight crony capitalism by supporting efforts to overturn ‘Citizens United,’  to promote shareholders’ rights (to determine corporations’ political spending), to ensure that the S.E.C. requires disclosure by publicly traded companies, to pressure the IRS to stop political groups from skirting the law by posing as tax-exempt “social welfare” groups, and the like.

Per Michael, Mikulski is getting feedback from NGOs who are unhappy that some of the proposed amendments include NGOs with corporations.   And some bills limit corporations but not unions, unfortunately.

PLANNING FOR FEB 26TH MEETING AND GETTING PARTCIPATION

Joe sent one e-mail, but with no subsequent reminders, for this conference call;  will include reminders in the future.

We’ll have at least monthly phone banks, and also regular conference calls and meetings.   At this time we will contact the more active GMOM members individually by phone to invite them to help with meeting publicity, attend the meeting, and upcoming phonebank.

The structure committee will reconvene so that we can get approval for the Charter / Bylaws at the next meeting.
